How the money actually flows

EdChoice Expansion (near-universal) + Traditional EdChoice is a voucher program with broad (near-universal) eligibility. Awards are Up to $6,166 (K-8) / $8,408 (9-12) for FY27. Payments run through Ohio Dept. of Education and Workforce (ODEW) — pays chartered private school directly. Confirm the current details on the official program site before acting.

1. Confirm how the money flows. Ohio families use EdChoice Expansion (near-universal) + Traditional EdChoice funds through Ohio Dept. of Education and Workforce (ODEW) — pays chartered private school directly to pay approved schools/providers. Your job is to be set up to receive them cleanly.

2. Get your business paperwork in order. Legal entity, tax ID (EIN), and proof you are a real operating school.

3. Meet the state requirements. To accept EdChoice funds a private school must hold a CHARTER from the Ohio State Board of Education (meets minimum operating standards). Non-chartered private schools are ineligible.

4. Apply as an approved provider. Obtain a state charter first; only the chartered school submits the scholarship application on the family's behalf.

5. Keep clean invoicing & records. Program spending is documented and audited. Clear invoices and audit-ready records are how you get paid and stay clear.

Important for Ohio: LITIGATION: EdChoice ruled unconstitutional by a Franklin County judge (2025), stayed pending appeal; still operating 2026-07-13 — do NOT state as permanently settled. Litigation sourced via news, not ODEW.
