The gate: No state approval to open. The only state funding is the Education Scholarship Account for students with disabilities, and an unaccredited school qualifies once it enrols an ESA student and serves that student's needs
What the rules actually say
“Mississippi compulsory school attendance law requires all students between the ages of 6-17 years of age to be enrolled in a public, private or home school educational program.”
— Mississippi Department of Education: Compulsory School Attendance FAQs
“The proof shall include a certificate of enrollment signed by the parent, guardian or custodian.”
— Mississippi Department of Education: Compulsory School Attendance FAQs
“It is a program designed to give those parents with special needs children the option of withdrawing their child from the public school system and receiving a designated amount of funds to help defray the cost of private school tuition or other specific allowable activities to educate their child.”
— Mississippi Department of Education: Education Scholarship Account
“"Eligible school" means a state-accredited special purpose school, a state-accredited nonpublic school, or a nonpublic school located in the state that has enrolled a participating student and is providing services for the participating student's disability or special education needs, or is providing services addressing a participating student's IEP.”
The sequence, in order
Where founders actually stall
Founders treat the ESA as a general voucher. It is not: it is small, capped, reimbursement-based, and only for students with disabilities. For a general-population microschool the realistic plan is private tuition until the federal credit arrives in 2027.
What we have not verified
Mississippi's minimum instructional days for private schools. A 180-day figure is widely repeated but we did not confirm it on an official page.
The current per-student ESA amount. Statute sets $6,500 for 2015-2016, adjusted each year since, and we did not find the current figure.
How many ESA places remain open this year.
We would rather say this than guess. Everything above that is stated as fact carries a link to the primary source, so you can check us.
